Before the 13th Century
Before the Thai alphabet existed, early Thai communities adapted writing traditions from Mon and Khom civilizations. Those writing systems ultimately traced their origins to ancient Indian scripts and became the foundation for the development of the Thai script.
13th Century – Thai Script Created
King Ramkhamhaeng the Great is traditionally credited with creating the Lai Sue Thai script, introducing a writing system designed to represent the sounds of the Thai language. It became the foundation of the modern Thai writing system.
14th–19th Century – Script Evolution
As writing materials evolved—from stone inscriptions to palm-leaf manuscripts and printed books—Thai characters gradually changed in form. During this period, the first Thai movable type also helped expand literacy and publishing.
20th Century – Present
The Royal Society of Thailand has continued to standardize spelling and writing conventions. Today, Thai script is used across books, education, computers, smartphones, and digital communication. While its appearance has evolved over time, it has remained in continuous use for more than seven centuries.
